Since 1970, Astro Tool & Machine Co. has manufactured precision bodymaker Rams for the can-making industry — and today, we're recognized as one of the largest Ram producers in the world. Every Ram we build is made to order, engineered and machined to the exact tolerances your production line demands.

Built From the Ground Up

There's no catalog for our Rams. Every one is made to order, built from a technical drawing — or reverse-engineered from a sample if a drawing isn't available. That means every Ram we ship is matched precisely to the equipment it's built for, not pulled off a shelf.

Our Manufacturing Process

It starts with material. We machine Rams from tool steel or case-hardening steel, chosen to match the strength and wear resistance your application requires, using CNC lathes and mills to bring each Ram to its specified dimensions.

From there, every Ram goes through heat treatment with one of our Nadcap-accredited heat treating partners — companies who understand the specialized requirements Ram production demands. Because heat treatment and welding can shift dimensions slightly, each Ram is then ground and honed back to precise, final tolerance.

Where a Ram calls for it, we press-fit and hone bronze bearings directly in-house — bearings we manufacture ourselves, drawing on over 50 years of experience in bronze components. Before anything ships, every Ram is inspected against its technical drawing, then sent out worldwide from our Rahway, NJ facility.

Why Astro

Astro is one of the largest Ram producers in the world, with over 50 years of specialized experience behind every one we build. There's no off-the-shelf catalog — every Ram is made to order and matched to your exact specs, with bronze bearings manufactured and installed in-house rather than outsourced. Our Nadcap-accredited heat treating partners know Ram production inside and out, and if you don't have a drawing, we can build from a sample instead through our reverse engineering process.

Beyond New Production

Already have a Ram that's worn or damaged? We also offer full Ram remanufacturing and reconditioning — restoring worn Rams to like-new tolerances, often at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Learn About Ram Remanufacturing.

It varies by job — factors like material, quantity, and whether a part needs heat treatment or plating all play a role. That said, we quote promptly, keep you updated along the way, and always ship when promised.

Either works. If you have a technical drawing, we'll quote and produce directly from your specs. No drawing? Send us a sample part and we'll reverse-engineer it to match — same precision, either way.

Absolutely. While we built our reputation in the canning industry, we manufacture precision parts for food & beverage, maritime, metalworking, industrial products, and U.S. Military clients as well. If it demands tight tolerances, chances are we can build it.

Yes. Our CNC and automatic machinery lets us scale from a single custom part to high-volume production runs without sacrificing precision. Whether you need one prototype or an ongoing supply of thousands, we hold the same tight tolerances on every piece.

Your Precision Partner
